Hot dogs is a classic from American cuisine and always tastes good. This recipe makes homemade fried onions in a spicy breading. Along with mustard and ketchup, this is the perfect accompaniment to sausage sandwiches. Depending on your mood, you can also add pickles and/or jalapeños to the hot dogs.

  • 1 onion
  • 120 ml low-fat yogurt or kefir
  • 4 tbsp flour
  • ½ tsp paprika powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • salt to taste
  • vegetable oil approx. 500 ml for frying
  • 4 bock sausages
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • Mustard to taste
  • ketchup to taste
  • 1 pickle to taste
  • Jalapenos to taste


  • Peel onion, cut in half, slice into thin half rings.
  • Pour yogurt over, stir and let stand for about 30 minutes.
  • Mix flour, paprika and garlic powder, pepper and salt.
  • Remove onion half-rings from yogurt marinade, shake off and roll thoroughly in flour breading.
  • Set aside 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.
  • Heat remaining oil in a saucepan or deep skillet.
  • Fry onions a little at a time until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Then transfer the onions to paper towels.
  • Fry sausages in remaining oil in same skillet until crisp, about 5-6 minutes.
  • Cut hot dog bun lengthwise and place sausages inside.
  • Spread mustard and ketchup and sprinkle with sautéed onions.
  • If desired, hot dogs can be complemented with pickled cucumber slices and/or jalapeños.
