Melomakarona is a Greek Christmas cookie that should not be missed at Christmas. The cookies are spicy and soaked in honey syrup, and the nuts give the pastry an even more interesting taste. The finished melomakarona can be sprinkled not only with nuts, but also with ground cinnamon and cloves.

  • 200 g margarine
  • 1/2 cups olive oil
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp lemon grated, peel
  • 1/2 cup walnuts ground


  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cups sugar
  • 4 tablespoons honey
  • Lemon juice


  • Cream margarine and sugar in a food processor until fluffy.
  • Add olive oil, cinnamon, and grated lemon zest and mix vigorously.
  • Knead with the flour to form a firm dough.
  • Form finger-thick rolls from the dough, cut off pieces 5 - 6 mm thick.
  • Shape these pieces into round discs.
  • Grease baking paper with a little butter or margarine.
  • Place the slices on it with a little distance between them.
  • Bake the melomakarona in the oven at 180° C for about 15 - 20 minutes.
  • For the syrup, pour the water into a small pot.
  • Stir in the sugar and bring to a boil.
  • Remove the sugar water from the heat, add honey and lemon juice.
  • Mix everything well.
  • Remove the finished cookies from the oven, let them cool, and then dip them into the syrup.
  • Then let the melomakarona cookies steep for a while.
  • Sprinkle Christmas cookies with coarsely ground walnuts.
